Radicchio and the Deer

I think the pictures speak for themselves, but yesterday we checked the radicchio and they were looking very good. We planned to harvest them today. During the night deer executed a cunning raid and beat us to it. We cover the plants with row covers for protection from the cold, insect damage, and large herbivores, but the covers must have blown off sending a signal to deer everywhere that it was time to jump the fence and feast. As far as I can tell every single radicchio is ruined. I wish I had taken photos yesterday to show how beautiful these vegetables were, but perhaps that would just have added to our misery.
