I haven’t seen the Bluebirds or Juncos for a few days and now I think I know why. Identification of the bird-eating hawks is difficult but the brown feathering and yellow eye are clear signs this is a juvenile. The straight tail tip indicates a Sharp-shinned Hawk rather than a Cooper’s Hawk, but the size is more in line with a Cooper’s Hawk and as females are a good bit larger than males, we’re going for juvenile female Sharp-shinned Hawk. She was perched overlooking the hen-house but that seems a little ambitious so we think she is watching out for the songbirds who like to feed at the chicken feeders.
